Had a trip, slip or fall in the street or a public place such as a supermarket? You may be able to claim compensation.

Any claim must usually be made within 3 years of the accident date.

Common causes of slip, trip and fall accidents are defects on the ground such as broken or raised paving slabs, uneven ground, something protruding from the pavement or slipping on wet floor in shops, schools and hospitals.

Usually the local council are responsible for the upkeep of public roads or footpaths. They have a duty to make sure that the roads and pavements are safe and properly maintained in a reasonable condition. All public and private organisations owe a duty of care to ensure all visitors to their premises are safe.

At Fletchers Solicitors, our specialist trip, slip and fall team of lawyers will ease you through the claims process from start to finish. We are dedicated to maximising the level of compensation due to you and will ensure the claim reaches a conclusion as swiftly as possible without compromising our service to you.

What Should I do if I have a trip, slip or fall on a public road or in a public place?

  • Make sure you take photos and measurements of the defect that caused your trip, slip or fall as quickly as possible in case the area is repaired by the local council before your claim is reported. In the case of falling in public or private premises, make sure you report the accident to the owner as soon as possible and ask for it to be recorded in their accident book.
  • See your GP or a doctor at hospital, even if your injuries are not serious. A record will be made of the accident details and injuries which could help to prove that the accident caused your injuries
