Iain’s Story: Getting his independence back following spinal injury
Since we started in 1987, we’ve always specialised in serious injury cases. However, when one of our own serious injury solicitors, Ed Fletcher, had a motorbike accident in 1999 that severed his spinal cord and left him a paraplegic wheelchair user, the way we dealt with spinal injury cases changed forever.
When Ed returned to work after his accident, he decided to dedicate the rest of his working life to fighting for those who have suffered similar, life changing injuries themselves. Ed already worked as a specialist serious injury lawyer, so using his knowledge of the law was the natural way to help people. He understood completely the devastation caused by spinal injury, as well as the needs that people with spinal injury would have when it comes to things like care, transport, living arrangements and work. Ed wanted to ensure that everyone who suffers a spinal injury due to someone else’s negligence, gets the very best help. Armed with this philosophy, he set up our specialist Spinal Injury team, dealing only with claims involving serious spinal injuries. Everyone who joined that team not only had to be an excellent lawyer (that was a given), they also had to share Ed’s own personal passion for helping people and their families; for truly putting the injured client at the heart of everything they do.
Ed has since gone on to become our current company CEO, ensuring his personal mantra is now shared across the whole firm. The Spinal Injury team still continues and is now under the leadership of Serious Injury specialist Adrian Denson. The team has helped hundreds of people who have suffered serious life changing injuries as a result of all manner of different accidents. Adrian ensures that our team always follows Ed’s original philosophy and commitment level at all times. Our specialist spinal injury team always work on a no win-no fee basis, but that’s not really what we are about. We pride ourselves on taking on tricky cases that other law firms will not. We’ve won national awards for our legal work in this area and we have fought hard to win some landmark cases that have helped shape serious injury law within the UK. We’ve built up a network of like minded specialists in this area, ranging from medical and rehab experts to housing and vehicle adaptation companies. As one of our clients said (Iain Gilham – you can hear his story in the video above), “The team knew what I needed before I did”. That’s what it’s all about for us.
Its not just about ensuring you receive the right amount of compensation (although we have recovered in excess of £98 million for seriously injured clients in the last 3 years alone), its about ensuring that you or your loved one can live the best, most comfortable and most active life possible long after the case has concluded. Its not just about getting the money you are entitled to, its about getting the right care, the right equipment, the right house, a suitable car and having everything available to you to have the best possible life after injury. Many of our clients haven’t just learned to cope with spinal injury, they have learned to live with spinal injury. We’re really proud of our clients and the journey they have been on with us by their side. We’re also very proud of the work that we do.
