Path To Qualifying

The Period of Recognised Training (PORT), previously known as a ‘training contract’, is the final stage of training for prospective solicitors. The idea of a training contract is to encourage practical application, in a work-based setting, of the knowledge gained over the duration of the qualifying law degree and the Legal Practice Course (LPC).

Once the PORT is completed, and i’s are dotted and t’s crossed, one more name will be added to the SRA’s roll of solicitors.

Training Contracts Explained

Fletchers offer multiple PORTs per year, and the process has developed a reputation for being fiercely competitive. As well as formal qualifications, the candidates must possess exceptional intelligence, knowledge of the law, ethical principles and copious amounts of common sense.

The applicants are gradually put through a challenging set of legal and non-legal panel interviews, written assessments and speeches, until only the very best are offered a PORT. During the PORT itself, the successful applicants take ‘seats’ in different departments, gaining a broad range of practical experience to take through to their future careers as qualified solicitors.

Meet Ajith

Ajith joined Fletchers after graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University, he began working as a paralegal in our Medical Negligence department. In 2014 he was successful in gaining a PORT (Training Contract) at Fletchers and has since continued to progress through the company.
