Ahead of International Women’s Day 2021, a number of Fletcherians shared their thoughts. Here’s what Junior Litigation Executive, Jess Roberts had to say:

Your achievements and barriers you have overcome as a woman

I choose to challenge gender inequality in the efforts to create an Inclusive community. I am proud to have raised awareness of female reproductive rights through my article “Are Human Rights changing the way that law regulates female reproduction in the UK?” A topic which does not receive enough attention. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to analyse the impact that The Human Rights Act 1998 has had on female reproductive rights within the UK. My peers are often surprised to learn that the law surrounding female reproductive rights remains archaic, oppressive, and limits female decision-making autonomy, despite the enactment of the HRA 1998. I felt a great sense of achievement when this work was recognised as excellent by the University of Liverpool and I will continue to advocate throughout my legal career for law reform which protects and enhances female autonomy concerning their reproductive rights.

Inspiration – for example, are you a relative/friend of another Fletcherian and how have they inspired you

I am continuously inspired by my friends and colleagues who challenge and defy gender biases and stereotypes. As a young woman embarking on her legal career, I am lucky to work amongst so many wonderful female and male leaders and allies. The inclusive environment that Fletchers provides inspires me every day to pursue my legal career and apply the Fletchers ethos and values to all aspects of life.
