Concern for Lancashire dental patients following investigation
Concerns have been raised about a Lancashire dentist who left patients suffering from tooth loss and infections after he failed to treat them appropriately.
Dr Waqar Mohammed, the principal dentist at Clayton Dental Care in Clayton le Moor, is now being investigated by the General Dental Council. They have imposed conditions on his ability to practice while they carry out their investigations.
Range of complaints
The concerns are from 27 patients who were treated by Dr Mohammed between 2016 and 2020.
They relate to:
- failure to carry out radiographic screening and periodontal monitoring
- failure to obtain valid consent
- failure to carry out sufficient treatment planning
- failure to diagnose the source of pain
- poor patient management overall resulting in extractions and possible loss of further teeth
failure to diagnose caries
- provision of antibiotics without clinical justification.
Other allegations include that Dr Mohammed has used the name of the practice manager to sign NHS prescriptions for drugs to be used by other people with her receiving free prescriptions. However, the GDC Interim Orders Committee agreed that allegations of fraudulent prescriptions were “very scant in detail”, throwing the matter out.
A General Dental Council hearing was held on 2 March 2021 and the Interim Orders Committee did not consider suspension necessary but did place an interim 18 month order against Dr Mohammed.
The order has 15 detailed conditions which include Dr Mohammed cannot work unsupervised in a workplace. He is also required to report to his supervisor every two months and 21 days before any review into his case. The Order will be reviewed in October 2021.
Breach of trust
Litigation Executive, Roya Ratcliffe, of Fletchers said: “We know that this case will be of concern to patients of Dr Mohammed’s who have trusted him to look after them correctly. The General Dental Council have now placed orders on him and how he works while they investigate fully.
“If you believe that you have been treated negligently by this dentist, or have any concerns about dental work you have had, then we would urge you to speak to our medical negligence team to discuss your rights as soon as possible.”
