My Placement – Siobahn

20th August 2015

Siobahn is heading into the second year of her degree in September and is doing a My Placement to gain hands on experience and to assist with her current university studies. With the aim to undertake her Legal Practice Course once graduating, Siobahn has used her My Placement as an opportunity to gain a real insight into work in a solicitors firm.

I chose to do a placement as I personally think experience is the utmost importance in a law degree. It allows you to decide which areas of the law you prefer by getting real experience and especially before specialising in Year 3 of your degree and your Legal Practice Course.

The rotational structure of the placements offers the students the chance to work in different departments, being able to engage in a variety of tasks. Spending time in each department gives the students a flavour for what work they do and how it is conducted. Siobahn told us what area she has enjoyed most during her placement:

I have thoroughly enjoyed all my time at Fletchers Solicitors, but especially my time in the Medical Negligence Serious Injury Team. I had never seen how much work and effort is put in behind the scenes into cases. I also think that being able to spend a week in the costs department has been highly beneficial, especially in relation to my studies, as you aren’t taught this at University and don’t cover it in much detail as part of your Legal Practice Course.

Siobahn and the My Placement students have been are given a chance to complete real work to develop their legal and widen their workplace skills, as well as broadening their ability. The aim of the placements have been for the law students to get a real feel for the work that Fletchers complete and what we aim to achieve.

Experience and training that will not only be beneficial to my future prospects but also to my course at University. This placement in particular, has allowed me an insight to several different areas of the law in a large company. It has shown me the workings of not only solicitors but also the other positions that are part of a team.
