Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust maternity unit deaths under further scrutiny

The maternity units run by Shrewbsury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust have come under increased scrutiny as dozens of more patients have come forward to express concerns in relation to their treatment following an independent review looked at 23 cases in April 2017.

The Health Service Journal has reported that up to 60 mothers and babies are feared to have died or sustained serious life altering injuries. The full article can be found here.

The trust’s maternity services have been under scrutiny for some time and they have now announced an independent review into the previous and recently reported cases , which include the deaths of two babies in December 2017.

Maternity services are offered at both the Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal Hospitals. However, outpatient services at the units in Oswestry, Bridgnorth and Ludlow were suspended on safety grounds on 20 May 2018.
