The incident

Our client, a 75-year-old retiree, was cycling in the left-hand lane approaching a cross junction in Watford, Hertfordshire, when the defendant driver, who was driving in the right-hand lane, moved across, causing a collision. Our client was not wearing a helmet, which affected the severity of his injuries.

He suffered the following complications:

  • Head injury
  • Fractured rib, lower lung contusion and pneumothorax on the left side
  • Soft tissue injury to the lumbar spine and an exacerbation of pre-existing back pain
  • Psychological trauma (anxiety and fear of travel)

The case

The case was handled by Chartered Legal Executive, Ashley Nolan, supported by Paralegal, Georgia Catherall. The defendant’s solicitor admitted liability and the defendant was convicted of driving without due care and attention.

The aftermath

Following the cycle accident, it was recommended that our client receive physio for back pain, as well as CBT for the psychological distress caused by the accident. He suffered with a fear of travel, and anxiety around this topic, which meant that his day-to-day life was affected.

The case outcome

Ashley negotiated with the defendant’s solicitor and £50,000 was agreed to settle our client’s claim.

Following the case, our client commented:

“Ashley Nolan in particular treated me with courtesy and respect in a very efficient manner. I have no hesitation in recommending Fletchers for personal injury compensation claims – especially for bicycle accidents.”
