SMA Baby Formula Recall: What Parents Need to Know
In January 2026, Nestlé initiated a voluntary recall of specific batches of SMA infant formula and follow‑on formula sold in the UK and Ireland. The recall was issued as a precaution following concerns about the possible presence of cereulide, a heat‑stable toxin which can cause illness, particularly in young children.
The safety of babies is, quite rightly, of paramount importance. Any recall involving infant formula is deeply concerning for parents and carers, especially where the product is relied upon daily to meet a baby’s nutritional needs. This guide explores:
- Why the fomula is being recalled
- How to know if you have been impacted
- The scale of the issue
Why was SMA baby formula recalled?
Nestlé has explained that the recall was carried out “out of an abundance of caution” after certain batches were identified as potentially affected by cereulide, a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus. Importantly, cereulide cannot be destroyed by boiling water or normal formula preparation.
The Food Standards Agency has advised parents to stop using any affected batches immediately and to seek medical advice if their baby shows symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea or abdominal pain.
A full list of the affected products and batch numbers can be found in the official recall notice published by the manufacture here.
Problems caused by the recall
For many families, this recall has caused significant worry and disruption. Parents have reported anxiety about whether their child may have been affected, sudden changes to feeding routines, difficulty sourcing suitable alternative formula, and distress at having a trusted product withdrawn.
We fully understand how frightening and upsetting it can be for a parent to receive notice that a product used to feed their baby has been recalled. We are very empathetic to the distress this situation may have caused and recognise the emotional impact this can have on families.
Is this issue limited to the UK?
No. While many of the recalled products were sold in the UK and Ireland, food safety authorities have confirmed that investigations into the source of the contamination have involved multiple countries. International regulators have been working together to identify the cause and to ensure affected products are removed from circulation where necessary.
Has the issue now been resolved?
The manufacturer has stated that the recall relates to previously manufactured batches and that corrective measures have now been taken. Nestlé maintains that unaffected batches and other SMA products currently on sale are safe to use.
We are investigating potential claims
We are currently investigating potential claims on behalf of families whose children may have been affected by the recalled SMA baby formula.
If your child has been affected, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. At this stage, it is very important that you:
- Retain the product itself and do not dispose of it, as it may be required as evidence
- Take a note of the batch number and best‑before date
- Keep any receipts, medical records, or notes of symptoms and treatment
Where to find the batch number
The batch number is usually printed on the base of the tin or on the product packaging. An illustrative example is shown below.
