Jennifer Argent, Medical Negligence Solicitor at Fletchers Solicitors has spoken about the importance of knowing Bowel Cancer symptoms and going for regular cancer screenings.

“Today marks the beginning of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.

The second biggest cancer killer in the UK, Bowel Cancer can affect people of all ages but is notably prevalent in men aged over 50, with six out of 10 cases being diagnosed in people aged 70 or over.

Bowel Cancer UK notes that every 15 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with Bowel Cancer, amounting to almost 42,000 people every year and it is statistically more likely to affect men than women.

Because Bowel Cancer can be treatable and curable if diagnosed at an early stage, April has been set aside to educate the public and to raise awareness of Bowel Cancer symptoms.

Some of the most common ones to watch out for are;

  1. Bleeding after opening your bowels or blood stained faeces
  2. A persistent or unexplained change in your bowel habits
  3. Unexplained weight loss
  4. Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason
  5. A pain or lump in your stomach

These symptoms can arise and can be caused by a condition other than Bowel Cancer, but if you have one or more of these conditions, make an appointment with your GP.

In 2018 the Bowel Cancer screening age was lowered from 60 to 50.

If you receive an invite for your Bowel Cancer screening test, it is highly recommended that you attend.

It is also recommended that you follow screenings up every two years in order to increase the chances of detecting signs and symptoms early.

This is the best way to increase your survival rates for Bowel Cancer.”
