Tougher rules on prescribing weight loss injections mean patient safety must come first
Tougher rules on prescribing weight loss injections were revealed on Sky News this week. These stricter regulations follow growing concerns about the poor checks currently in place – meaning some vulnerable individuals with eating disorders have been able to access weight loss injections simply through email consultation, phone call, or supplying photographs of themselves to online pharmacies.
This highlights a much wider issues surrounding patient safety, prescription protocols, and the potential for medical negligence to occur. At Fletchers Solicitors, we embrace the stricter checks being put in place, and encourage prescribers to carefully consider the physical and mental wellbeing of their patients when handing out drugs.
Sky News acknowledged in their story that weight loss injections, like Wegovy and Ozempic, have been growing in popularity due to their effectiveness in reducing food cravings – which some individuals have been using to manage obesity and type 2 diabetes. However, the potential for misuse and causing nasty side effects – including gastrointestinal issues, pancreatitis, and psychological effects – have raised significant safety concerns. The new guidelines aim to reduce inappropriate prescribing, ensuring that such high-risk medications are handed out after thorough patient assessments.
Daniel Pope-Finney, Chartered Legal Executive at Fletchers Solicitors, emphasises the importance of these changes:
“I welcome the news that stricter checks have been put in place before weight loss injections are prescribed. I think it is a positive sign that more stringent guidance is being put in place and that individuals are being closely checked prior to issuing this potentially high-risk medication. The long-term risks do not appear to be known for this drug and so decision making needs to be clearly documented. Should pharmacists not stick to the new guidance then they risk being open to legal action, but it is yet to be known how strict the new guidance is and whether it would be a breach of duty of care not to follow such guidance.”
Future implications
Looking ahead, these changes to guidelines could have the potential to affect the wider market of how drugs are obtained through online pharmacies. This is because stricter regulations for weight loss injections may set a precedent for other high-risk drugs, prompting healthcare authorities to review and tighten prescribing guidelines across various medications. This shift could lead to more cautious prescribing practices, increase patient evaluation, and emphasise risk management when prescribing drugs.
For patients, these regulatory changes offer a layer of protection, and should help to ensure that prescriptions are based on comprehensive medical evaluations.
