A delivery driver sought legal support from Fletchers Solicitors after an unfortunate incident during a routine dental appointment.

The incident

While undergoing a scale and polish using an ultrasonic scaler, our client swallowed a dental hygiene brush. However, the defendant failed to notice what had happened.

Over the next month, the client developed a persistent cough, experienced pain in the right side of his chest, and was unable to eat properly. Concerned about his symptoms, he visited his GP, who arranged for him to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. A CT scan of his thorax revealed a small foreign object lodged in his chest.

The client was transferred to another hospital, where he underwent a therapeutic rigid and flexible bronchoscopy to remove the brush.

The impact

The client started coughing a few days after the brush was swallowed. The cough got progressively worse, resulting in him struggling to talk with others. This caused significant discomfort and embarrassment, especially when coughing in public, and his social life was severely affected.

The client’s diet was initially limited to softer foods because he experienced pain when swallowing. However, as his symptoms got worse, he limited his diet to one or two meals a day. As a result, he lost approximately 5-10kg in weight. Additionally, the client was forced to take time off work for surgery and recovery, resulting in a loss of earnings. All this led the client to suffer significant stress and anxiety.

The case

An expert Clinical Negligence Solicitor at Fletchers handled the case, securing a successful resolution. The client received £6,500 in compensation for the physical, emotional, and financial difficulties he experienced.
