Incident Details:
Our client attended a scheduled appointment with her dentist for a crown fitting on one of her lower back teeth. During the procedure, an error by the dentist resulted in a cut to her lip, leading to bleeding, unexpected discomfort, and ultimately, permanent visible scarring both internally and externally in the affected area.
Injuries and Impact:
The injury caused our client unnecessary pain and resulted in permanent facial scarring in a prominent area of her face. This visible scarring has had a profound impact on her confidence, leaving her feeling self-conscious and affecting her overall sense of well-being.

Settlement Reached for Our Client Who Was Harmed by an Incorrect Dental Treatment Plan
Settlement Amount: £3000
Dental negligence occurs when a dental practitioner fails to provide the appropriate standard of care during a procedure, leading to harm or injury to the patient. This is a particularly stressful experience, especially for individuals like our client, who works in a face-to-face role requiring confidence and composure.
Incident Details:
Our client, a 48-year-old youth justice worker from Cardiff, had been a loyal patient of her dental practice for over 15 years. Seeking to replace a missing upper left molar, she consulted her dentist about her available options.
The defendant dentist recommended a Maryland bridge between her missing tooth (UL6) and the adjacent tooth (UL5). Trusting her dentist’s expertise, the client underwent the treatment, which spanned over six months.
However, it wasn’t until the work had been completed that it was realised that UL5, the supporting tooth, was too small and insufficient to support the recommended bridge. Despite these concerns, it took a further ten months for the improper bridgework to be replaced with a 2-unit bridge connecting the missing tooth (UL6) to UL7. By this point, the client’s existing UL5 tooth had already been damaged, and she had been enduring pain and difficulties with eating.
Injuries and Impact:
The result of this dental negligence case was avoidable damage to her otherwise healthy UL5 tooth. The client experienced prolonged, unnecessary pain for nearly a year, during which she was forced to chew only on the right side of her mouth, with her diet restricted to soft foods. This of course also took away the joy of eating socially or for enjoyment, further adding to her distress.
Further to this our client is working as a youth justice worker, a profession that requires her to engage with people daily. This case of dental negligence caused our client unnecessary stress and discomfort, which not only affected her physical well-being but also her confidence.
Legal Support and Case Outcome:
Following the legal proceedings, the client was awarded a settlement amount of £3,000.
Dentistry can be an expensive necessity, and our client has paid out of her own funds for the failed treatment. The compensation gave some relief for this financial stress. The settlement recognised the year of avoidable pain, dietary restrictions, and distress caused by the dentist’s substandard care.
