Surgical error in hip replacement leads to £25,000 settlement

Background 

Our client, a 55-year-old chef, underwent a hip replacement in December 2023. However, during the surgery, a serious error was made. The ball and socket implants in a hip replacement are meant to be the same size, but somehow a 32mm head and a 36mm liner were used. 

The mistake was missed by hospital staff, even when the stickers from the implant boxes were submitted to the National Joint Registry (NJR). The following day, the NJR contacted the hospital to point out that the liner and head sizes did not match.  

Impact  

Our client had to wait until she had somewhat recovered from surgery before she was booked in for revision surgery in February 2024. During her recuperation period, the client relied on her mum to help her with shopping and household chores.   

The case and outcome
