Matthew Mitchell-Jennings

I’m a Solicitor and Team Leader at Fletchers, leading a team of lawyers handling a variety of clinical negligence cases, with a particular focus on group action work. My team has been involved in a number of notable cases, including those concerning orthopaedic surgeon Mian Munawar Shah, Mr Jeremy Parker, and the Bristol Heart Institute.

I began my legal career in 2014 in personal injury before transitioning into clinical negligence in 2020, and I qualified as a solicitor in 2021.

I did an undergraduate degree in biomedical sciences before switching to law. I now specialise in clinical negligence as it allows me to use my additional experience to take a unique approach to cases. I’m a lawyer who has performed a full human cadaveric dissection, so I bring something extra to the table! I specialise in group action litigation as I can see the significant change that this can make for the wider public. We identify patterns of negligence and individual clinicians who are outliers helps to flag issues to the NHS, their relevant powers and ensure these issues don’t affect others. We can help numbers of clients who have all been affected and utilise strength in numbers to help them achieve the outcome and support that they need.

I’m extremely tenacious and love to “deep dive” into the defendants to help support clients in getting the outcomes they deserve. I’m approachable, and like to build personal relationships with clients along the way.

The claimant underwent orthopaedic hip surgery which was not performed to a suitable standard, leaving the prosthesis at an inappropriate angle. The claimant required revision surgery and achieved £100,000 to help to fund the additional care and assistance that would be needed in the future.

The claimant underwent unnecessary arthroscopy procedures which lead to 3 further avoidable procedures. The claimant achieved £70,000 to include costs for future surgery to be done privately, additional medication costs and care and assistance provided by friends and family.

ANON:

The case related to a delay in treatment of a SCC which lead to more extensive surgery, and the need for immunotherapy. The claimant already had a history of cancerous lesions. The case settled for £25,000.

We structure our team so that each member handles a different stage of the case, allowing us to progress matters quickly and efficiently. With ongoing supervision across all cases, I can draw on each person’s strengths to ensure clients receive the best possible support.

I’ve worked at Fletchers for 8 years now and have worked my way up from a paralegal, to qualifying as a solicitor, and becoming a team leader. I’m passionate about my team, the strengths they all bring, and their tenacity in achieving positive outcomes for clients. Fletchers allows me the flexibility to balance work and family life, and gives me the time to be a present father alongside my working responsibilities.

I have a wife who is also a solicitor and who I met at Fletchers, we have two children and I would describe myself as outdoorsy and I love to hike. We have regular family trips in our touring caravan to Wales and the Lake District. I also have an allotment which takes up a lot of spare time.
