Background of the collision

Reports suggest that the lead train came to an unexpected stop after a fault in its Automatic Warning System (AWS) triggered an automatic brake application, according to RAIB's preliminary findings. Moments later, a second East Midlands train travelling on the same line failed to stop at a red signal. The second train subsequently collided with the rear of the stationary train.

Tragically, the collision killed the driver of the trailing train. More than 160 people were injured, with over 100 requiring hospital treatment. Emergency services launched a large-scale operation involving more than 20 ambulances, air ambulances and dozens of firefighters, working to free and treat passengers trapped in the damaged carriages.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has launched an investigation into the crash. Investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the train passing the red signal, including train operation, signalling and other contributing factors.
