Fletchers Solicitors have settled a case for £3m for a man who had his leg amputated following a motorbike collision in 2015.

The 34-year-old had been riding his motorbike through central London when a car went through a red light, colliding with his bike. He sustained a degloving injury to the foot and developed an infection. After seven operations to try and save his leg, he had to undergo a below the knee amputation of his right leg.

The father of two was in good health prior to the accident and had been studying The Knowledge to be a black cab driver. After two and a half years study, he was due to take his exam just one month after the accident.

Following the accident in September 2015 he was treated for his injuries in the Royal London Hospital. It was after he was discharged and back home that he got an infection. He then had the operations to try and save his leg before taking the decision to have his limb amputated.

He now has a prosthetic leg and uses a wheelchair for longer distances. He has also developed severe post-traumatic stress disorder and severe phantom pain.

He said: “I have good days and bad days. I made the decision to amputate but at least I got to make that choice. They said that the phantom pain might not have been as bad if they’d amputated my foot straight away but I’m glad I got to make the decision – I could have woken up and it just wasn’t there.

“There was a risk of infection and I was at risk of having to have the leg off above the knee, so I weighed up my options at the time and I got on really well with the surgeon so knew I could trust him.

“The surgeon came to see me every morning to see how I was, so I had every confidence that he was doing everything possible for me. I was ready for my leg to come off because the pain was so bad, but the decision was all mine.”

The injuries he suffered have caused a significant loss of independence and he requires a substantial level of support from his partner and his father.

He added: “I have had lots of help and support from my children, my partner and my dad. When I couldn’t move off the couch and have been bed bound, they’ve really helped me get through. I’ve had lots of support from family and friends to get me through the bad days.”

“I’m just thankful for my life and feel lucky to be here – it could have been a lot worse.”

He was referred to Fletchers Solicitors to deal with his claim and solicitors Julia Eyton, Emma Jackson and Ashley Nolan worked on his case.

He added: “I would recommend Julia and Fletchers to anyone. They were unbelievable and made me feel so comfortable. I felt so at ease with Julia, Emma and Ashley.  I would recommend them to anyone who unfortunately finds themselves in a similar situation. I feel so fortunate that we found Fletchers and thank them for all the work that they did.”

Julia Eyton, head of Catastrophic Personal Injury, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to represent my client. Liability was denied by the driver and his insurers and following a two-day trial judgement was found in my client’s favour on a 100%.

“It was great to see the relief on my client’s face following the trial knowing he had not done anything wrong. My client’s rehabilitation was and is a long road with the right compensation this enables him to start to relive his life which had been put on hold since 2015.”
