SERIOUS INJURY

One Client’s Journey to Recovery After a Motorway Crash

Our 42-year-old client was a dedicated carer before her life changed in an instant. She had been travelling as a passenger along the M6 near Preston when tragedy struck. The vehicle she was in had come to a stop, and without warning, a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) collided into the back of it at speed. The force of the impact left her with devastating injuries and a future that looked very different from the one she had worked so hard to build.

What you’ll find in this case study:

  • The impact of the incident, including the effect on the client’s career and personal life
  • The role of specialist legal support
  • Securing interim payments for early rehabilitation
  • A substantial compensation settlement reflecting long-term needs

The Devastating Injuries She Endured

The crash caused a complex series of traumatic injuries. These included:

  • A left spiral femoral fracture
  • An aortic injury
  • Multiple spinal fractures
  • A retroperitoneal haematoma
  • A Grade 2 kidney injury
  • Liver contusion (eruption of blood vessels in the liver
  • Right rib fractures
  • A splenic laceration
  • A head injury

In addition, she also suffered serious psychological trauma, which continues to affect her to this day.

Initially treated at Royal Preston Hospital, far from her home, she was isolated form her loved ones. Recovering without the immediate comfort of family nearby only added to the emotional toll of her injuries.

The Human Cost

While the physical injuries were extensive, the wider impact of the crash was deeply personal.

The accident strained her relationship with her partner, who had been driving at the time. Sadly, they later separated. As she continued her recovery, she relied on the support of close friends and family. This was a support network that proved invaluable throughout the healing process and the claim.

Her career as a carer, a role she had loved and found great fulfilment in, was no longer possible due to her injuries. The demands of the job were simply incompatible with her new physical limitations.

A New Path Forward

Determined not to be defined by what had happened, she sought legal support. Her claim was expertly managed by Associate & Chartered Legal Executive Victoria Martin and Chartered Legal Executive Katie Rutter.

Together, they built a detailed case, working with medical professionals, vocational specialists, and rehabilitation providers to understand the full impact of the injuries, both immediate and long term.

A Meaningful Outcome

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Victoria and Katie, our client secured a compensation settlement of £167,500,000  including interim payments of £22,500.00 already received.

That interim payment proved crucial. It enabled her to begin extensive rehabilitation, access the equipment she needed to regain some independence, start retraining for a new, sedentary role reduced the financial stress due to receiving a reduced income.

With the final settlement, she now has the funds to explore private treatment, including further surgery to remove the remaining metalwork from her leg, as well as orthotic support to improve mobility and quality of life.

A Future Reclaimed

Though she may never return to the life she had before, our client has found a new sense of stability and purpose. Her resilience throughout her recovery has been nothing short of inspiring, and the legal support she received has allowed her to reclaim control of her future.
