Yaser Jabbar

Fletchers are dedicated to offering support and guidance to former patients of Surgeon Yaser Jabbar, who previously treated children at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Recent media reports have highlighted concerns regarding the use of limb-lengthening devices by Mr. Jabbar, prompting an independent review of the hospital’s orthopaedic service. Our team can offer Free, Confidential advice to patients who have been affected so they can understand their legal position and learn how we are able to support them. It will be a very worrying time and we are here to support those affected in seeking answers around their treatment, compensation and justice.

Great Ormond Street Hospital independent review of Mr Jabbar’s surgery

Great Ormond Street Hospital has initiated an independent review of its paediatric orthopaedic service, specifically focusing on the practices of former consultant orthopaedic surgeon Yaser Jabbar. Families of all children treated by Mr. Jabbar have been contacted following concerns raised about limb-lengthening and reconstruction surgery involving the use of an Ilizarov frame. This device consists of a rigid frame which is fixed on the outside of the leg but connected through the skin to the bone to allow any break or mispositioning to be corrected.

Why Fletchers

More information

The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) was initially called in to review the paediatric orthopaedic service and this raised specific concerns about Mr. Jabbar’s expertise in limb reconstruction. Dozens of patients treated by Mr. Jabbar between June 2017 and October 2022 will now undergo an independent review of their medical records to ensure the appropriateness of the treatment provided.

Great Ormond Street Hospital acknowledges the potential distress caused by receiving letters regarding Mr. Jabbar’s care and has apologised for any worry and uncertainty among families.

Royal College of Surgeons Review Findings

The RCS conducted a thorough review and provided immediate feedback, confirming actions to address patient safety risks and improve service delivery. The final review report, submitted to the trust on Oct 31, 2023, highlighted a supplementary review of episodes of patient care in the limb lengthening services. The report has however not been published by the Trust.

Licence Surrender and GMC Investigation

Mr. Jabbar voluntarily surrendered his medical license on Jan 8, according to the General Medical Council (GMC), which continues its investigation. Conditions were imposed on Mr. Jabbar four days earlier, including the need for a clinical supervisor and approval from the GMC before starting non-NHS work. A complaint of medical negligence is being investigated, initiated prior to the RCS review.

Great Ormond Street Hospital has said that it takes the RCS concerns seriously and is committed to a thorough review by independent experts from other paediatric hospitals. Patients impacted by Mr. Jabbar’s practices will be kept informed, and medical records will be independently reviewed to ensure the highest standards of care.
