What is a spinal cord injury claim?

Having a spinal cord injury is life changing. It impacts families and those affected in ways which they can’t predict. The spinal cord sends and receives messages between your brain and the rest of your body, so an injury here can be devastating to your general wellbeing.

Our team of serious personal injury lawyers regularly help people who have been affected by a spinal injury rebuild their lives. This could have been as a result of a road accident, accident at work in the public or as a result of medical negligence.

What are common causes of a spinal cord injury?

Spinal cord injuries can be caused by a physical trauma to the body; such as being involved in a road traffic accident or workplace injury. Spinal cord injuries can also be caused through negligent medical treatment; such as the delayed or misdiagnosis of a moderate injury to the spinal cord, which exacerbates through lack of treatment, or through a surgical procedure gone wrong.

What are the symptoms of a spinal cord injury?

The symptoms of a spinal cord injury vary depending on where the injury occurs. Generally, the higher up on the spinal cord the injury happens, the more of the body is affected. Common symptoms of a spinal cord injury include:

  • Difficulty walking or with mobility generally
  • Full or partial paralysis of the body; specifically, the limbs
  • Weakness of the body, specifically in the limbs
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Feelings of spreading numbness or tingling in the feet and hands
  • Pain, stiffness or unease of the back and / or the limbs

How are spinal cord injuries treated?

There is unfortunately no effective treatment that can reverse damage done to the spinal cord. Treatment can only help to manage the symptoms; with a focus on pain relief and physiotherapy to help manage mobility issues. Often, mobility aids are required; such as a wheelchair or walking frame. Many of our clients have also benefited from home adaptations that allow more freedom of movement, such as wider doorframes, stairlifts or single-level living.

Can I claim for a spinal cord injury?

Generally, if you have suffered a spinal injury and someone else was at fault, they would be the defendants in your claim. This could be a drivers insurance company in the event of a road accident, the NHS or private health provider if this was as a result of medical negligence or your employers insurer if this was at work. As part of our Free Case assessment we are able to explore these options for you and identify the responsible party.

Working with a specialist team to secure personal injury compensation helps to ease financial pressure, and also helps provide access to treatment which may not be available on the NHS.

Once we have made an initial assessment, our serious personal injury specialists will work to get you an interim payment. This is when we negotiate with the defendant to provide you with financial help before the completion of a claim so you are able to pay for things which you need during your recovery.
